Just after Robert Greenberg was removed from the LA Gear board, he started this new shoes company with his son, who was also a distributor for the shoe brand Doc Marten. The company was founded in Manhattan Beach, California in 1992. It was three years after when they came up withy their own line of shoes.

In the early years of Skechers Shoes, their designs are similar with that of the boots and skate shoes of Doc Martens. From then, the company came with its own product designs and began t include even casual footwear.

The company also took another direction by trying to get a share of the female shoe market. To achieve this, Skechers Shoes got famous female celebrities to endorse the brand including Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, The Spice Girls, Carrie Underwood and Ashlee Simpson. The new American Idol, David Cook, has also signed a deal with Skechers Shoes until the end of 2009.
