Dr. Martens Shoes is a known shoe and accessory brand from Germany. The brand is also known as Doc Martens, DMs, or Docs. The technology used in Dr. Martens shoes, which is the bouncing soles or the air-cushioned soles, was designed by Dr. Klaus Maertens from Germany.
Consumers of Dr. Martens shoes
This brand of shoes and boots has been popular with skinheads, grungers, punks, and some other youth groups.
It is interesting to note, though, that the earliest clients of Cr. Martens Shoes werewomen and housewives who were in their ’40s.
The history of Dr. Martens shoes
Dr. Klaus Maertens was one of the doctors who came with the German army during the Second World War. In 1945, while he was on leave, his ankle was injured while he was skiing. He found that the regular army boots uncomfortable for his injury that he designed to improve the boots using air-padded soles and soft leather.
After the war, Dr. Maertens tried to sell a version of his air-padded boots, but he wasn’t lucky. That was until 1947, in Munich, where he met his old friend, Dr. Herbert Funck. Because of Dr. Funck’s interest in the shoe design, he went in business with Dr. Maertens using discarded rubber from the airfields of Luftwaffe.
The year 1952 marks the opening of their first factory in Munich. As the company grew, in 1959, the two doctors started looking at opportunities to sell the products to other countries. Not long after, the patent for UK manufacture was bought by the R. Griggs Group, Ltd. It was then that the brand became known as Dr. Martens. Other improvements made by the British manufacturer of Dr. martens included the AirWair trademark for the soles, the yellow stitching, and the new heel shape to achieve a better fit.
By the year 2000, Dr. Martens was being sold only by the AirWair brand. In 2003, due to the decrease in sales, the company had to close the factories in United Kingdom. The manufacturing facilities of Dr. Martens had to be moved to Asia, in the countries of China and Thailand. In 2007, the company opened a store again in Wollaston, England, and the Cobbs Lane Factory, where the vintage line is being manufactured. These products are manufactured using the original specs of the Dr. Martens brand. These are exclusively available from the US and UK websites of Dr. Martens.
