Boots are special footwear items or shoes characterized by their unique height and shape. Usually made of rubber or leather, boots cover at least the ankle and the foot, sometimes extending to the knees. Some boots even reach as high as the hips. Most boots have distinct heels that can easily be distinguished from the rest of the shoes.

Types of boots

Boots come in different types based on various factors such as their use or purpose, style, and the materials from which they’re made. Based on the material used to make them, boots can be classified as leather, rubber, or canvas. There also other materials in making boots, but those three types are the most common. These materials prevent the penetration of foreign materials such as water, mud, dirt, and snow into the shoe.

There are various types of boots known in different names and used for various purposes. Gumboots, for example, are simple waterproof boots that come in different upper lengths. High boots that are usually worn by anglers are called “waders.” They are usually equipped with insulation features for warmth.

There are boots used particularly for outdoor activities and industrial settings. These boots are usually strong and durable, resisting damage even during activities that require heavy duty strength. Steelworkers usually wear special boots that can withstand heat and possible injuries from getting caught in a pool of molten metal. There are also boots used as protection for workers working in environments with high chemical exposure. Others, however, can be inflated and insulated to protect the feet when walking along extremely cold places such as Antarctica. These are often worn by scientists and explorers.

Some types of boots are also used for winter sports such as skating, skiing, and snowboarding. There are also boots specially made for hiking, mountaineering, and motorcycling. Motorcycle boots come in several varieties, including engineer boots, harness boots, motocross boots, racing boots, and touring boots.

Besides their practical use, boots, particularly those made of leather, are also commonly worn for fashion. Even work boots have been adopted for various fashion statements. Furthermore, a type of boots called “dress boots” is popularly used as a stylishly rugged alternative to dress shoes.

Other boots for fashion are made with zipper closures, platform soles, spike heels, or pointed toes for fashionable footwear with more character.

Based on their height, boots can be classified into any of the following categories: ankle boots, wedge boots, thigh-high boots, knee-high boots, and hip boots. According to style, boots can fall into any of these categories: Chelsea boots, cowboy boots, dress boots, Gieka boots, Go-go boots, Hessian boots, Mukluks or dry-snow boots, rigger boots, and Wellington boots.
